Windows Installation Guide

Having trouble installing Memento?

Because Memento is a new, open-source application, Microsoft Windows might not recognize it yet. This can cause a "Windows protected your PC" warning or a false-positive virus alert.

This is normal for new apps that haven't purchased an expensive corporate license yet. Memento is safe, open-source, and free.

SmartScreen

1. If you see "Windows protected your PC" (SmartScreen)

This just means Windows doesn't recognize our developer signature yet.

  1. Click "More info" text link.
  2. Click the "Run anyway" button.

Windows Defender

2. If the installation is blocked or the app won't open

Windows Defender might be over-protective of the video downloader tools we use.

  1. Go to Windows Security (search in Start menu).
  2. Click Virus & threat protection.
  3. Click Protection history.
  4. Find the recent entry for "Memento Setup" or "Memento".
  5. Click Actions > Restore or Allow on device.

3. Pro Tip: Installation Folder

When running the installer, you can choose to install Memento to your own user folder (default) to avoid needing Administrator permissions.
